What are Fibroids?
Fibroids are abnormal growths in or on the uterus of women. These tumors can grow to be quite large, causing severe stomach pain and heavy periods. In some circumstances, they produce no symptoms at all. The growths are usually noncancerous or benign. An experienced doctor can help alleviate your problems.
Fibroids range in size from tiny seedlings that are undetectable to enormous masses that deform and expand the uterus. A single fibroid or a group of them can be present. Multiple fibroids can cause the uterus to enlarge to the point where it reaches the rib cage, causing weight gain. Uterine fibroids affect many women at some point in their life. However, because uterine fibroids rarely cause symptoms, you may be unaware that you have them. During a pelvic exam or a pregnancy ultrasound, your doctor may uncover fibroids by chance.

Symptoms of Fibroids
Many women with fibroids have no symptoms at all. The location, size, and number of fibroids can affect symptoms in persons who have them.
The following are the most prevalent indications and symptoms of uterine fibroids in women who have them:
- Menstrual bleeding is really heavy
- Menstrual cycles that last more than a week
- Pelvic discomfort or pressure
- Urination on a regular basis
- Having trouble emptying the bladder
- Constipation
- Leg aches or a backache
Causes of Fibroids
Fibroids in the uterus are very prevalent. Fibroids can affect up to one in every five women throughout their reproductive years. By the age of 50, half of all women develop fibroids.Fibroids are caused by a variety of factors that no one understands about. They’re supposed to be brought on by:
- Genetic Changes: Changes in the human genome Many fibroids have gene alterations that aren’t found in normal uterine muscle cells.
- Hormones: Estrogen and progesterone, two hormones that boost uterine lining development in preparation for pregnancy throughout each menstrual cycle, appear to encourage the growth of fibroids.
- Hormonal Imbalance: Fibroids have a higher number of estrogen and progesterone receptors than uterine muscle cells. Due to a decrease in hormone production, fibroids tend to diminish after menopause.
- Other Growth Factors: Insulin-like growth factors and other substances that aid in tissue maintenance may have an impact on fibroid growth.
- Matrix Found Outside of Cells (ECM): ECM is the substance that holds cells together, similar to mortar between bricks. Fibroids have an increase in ECM, which makes them fibrous. Growth factors are also stored in the ECM, which induces biological changes in the cells.
Diagnosis
During a normal pelvic exam, uterine fibroids are frequently discovered by chance. Your doctor may notice changes in the shape of your uterus, which could indicate the presence of fibroids.
If you have uterine fibroids symptoms, your doctor may request the following tests:
- USG: Your doctor may order an ultrasound if further confirmation is required.
- Blood Tests: A complete blood count (CBC) to identify if you have anemia due to persistent blood loss, as well as other blood tests to rule out bleeding disorders or thyroid abnormalities, are examples of these tests.
- Imaging Tests: Imaging tests such as MRI, Hysterosonography, Hysteroscopy, and Hysterosalpingography can also be prescribed by your doctor to rule out possibilities of your condition being anything else.
