Complete Stroke Management and Treatment at Medica

Stroke is one of India’s most common causes of death and disability. There is also a significant range in case fatality rates, with Kolkata having the highest at 42 percent. When the blood flow to a region of your brain is blocked or diminished, brain tissue is deprived of oxygen and nutrients, resulting in a stroke. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die. Medica’ s ‘Stroke Unit’ has 24×7 emergency facilities including thrombolysis, carotid investigations and interventions, and stroke surgery.

We offer Medica Emergency Services that provides 24 hour consultant coverage, has an ACLS ambulance for critical patient transport, and is ready to handle all types of emergencies including strokes.

Symptoms of Stroke

Every year, around 1.8 million people in India suffer from a stroke, and only early treatment can reduce morbidity and mortality. Therefore, knowing the signs can help reduce the fatalities of the stroke. These common symptoms are:

  • Difficulty in speech and understanding others.
  • Numbness or paralysis of the face, arm, or leg.
  • Problems with vision in one or both eyes.
  • Sudden severe headaches.
  • Difficulty in movement/walking.

Causes of Stroke

A blocked artery (ischemic stroke) or a leaking or bursting blood vessel are the two most common causes of stroke (hemorrhagic stroke). A transient ischemic attack (TIA) is a momentary disruption of blood flow to the brain that does not cause long-term symptoms in some persons.

  • Ischemic Stroke: The most common sort of stroke is this one. It occurs when the blood arteries in the brain narrow or block, resulting in substantially restricted blood flow (ischemia).
  • Hemorrhagic Stroke: When a blood vessel in your brain leaks or ruptures, it causes a hemorrhagic stroke. Many disorders that alter your blood arteries might cause brain hemorrhages.
  • Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA): Often called a ministroke — is a brief period of symptoms that resemble those of a stroke. A TIA happens when a clot or debris restricts or prevents blood flow to a region of your neurological system, similar to an ischemic stroke.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Some of the risk factors for stroke and heart disease are the same. Also, because each is a risk factor for the other, stroke and heart disease are linked. Stroke is a risk factor for coronary heart disease, and stroke is a risk factor for coronary heart disease.

If you’ve had a stroke or stroke symptoms and an artery is more than 50 percent blocked, surgery may help you. However, not everyone is in good health. The hazards may exceed the advantages if you’ve had a massive stroke and haven’t recovered, or if both of your carotid arteries are mostly clogged. In most cases of hemorrhagic stroke, surgery is required to reduce intracranial (within the skull) pressure produced by bleeding. Hemorrhagic stroke caused by an aneurysm or a faulty blood artery can be treated surgically to prevent further strokes.

It’s vital to get medical help as soon as possible if you’re having a stroke. Treatment as soon as possible after a stroke can help to reduce the long-term effects of the stroke and even avoid mortality.

Strokes are often diagnosed through physical examinations and examination of brain images obtained during a scan. The doctor will want to learn as much as possible about your symptoms when you initially arrive at the hospital with a suspected stroke.
